Landfall director Cecilia Aldarondo Flora Hanitijo Aldarondo presents a far more nuanced view of Puerto Rico in her award-winning documentary Landfall, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at DOC NYC’s Written and directed by Cecilia Aldarondo, the film centers on her attempts to find out more about the life and death of her uncle Miguel Dieppa, an aspiring actor and playwright who died of an AIDS -related illness when Aldarondo was six years old and had only ever met him once. Family, religion, sexuality, and stigma—these are the themes that pervade Professor Cecilia Aldarondo’s debut documentary, Memories of a Penitent Heart, which catalogues her investigation into her uncle Miguel’s death from AIDS 25 years after the fact. In the film, Aldarondo scours family records in an attempt to uncover the identity of Cecilia Aldarondo makes deeply intimate, personal films that telescope outward onto broader social and existential issues, including sexuality, bigotry, family and religion. Cecilia Aldarondo is a New York-based filmmaker and critic, who holds an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths College, and a PhD in Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society from the University of Minnesota.
